Jane Trengove's Melbourne Bathroom Modification
The Project
Jane Trengove, a disabled artist living and working in Narrm Melbourne, wrote about her bathroom modification after further loss of physical capacity from Post Polio Syndrome. The bathroom had become the biggest barrier at home, because she could not shower and dress independently in the old layout.
Her occupational therapist helped define the scope, and the solution was effectively a full rebuild: an accessible shower, accessible toilet positioning, and a vanity layout that supported safer day-to-day use. To get there, Jane had to gather quotes from two builders, select a contractor, and submit the final package to the NDIS for funding approval.
Because the bathroom works meant she could not stay in the house during construction, the plan also included temporary accessible accommodation nearby. That extra detail is easy to overlook, but it's often part of what makes a major home modification actually workable.
The Company
This case study was published by Housing Hub and written from Jane's own perspective. It is a good reminder that the best home modifications are shaped by the person using them, not just by a generic checklist of fixtures.
Why This Matters
For Melbourne homeowners and NDIS participants, the lesson here is simple: if a bathroom no longer supports independent living, it can be rebuilt in a way that restores dignity and routine. The funding process takes paperwork, but the outcome can be life-changing when the design is done properly.
